Holi Festival Hands in India

Shades of red and orange often feature in Holi celebrations and are popular amongst adherents of the Hindu faith. In this tradition, these colors represent fire, and element that carries religious significance by purifying evil energies and attracting divine protection.

Alexander Burzik, born 1976 in Weimar, Germany, studied visual communication at the Bauhaus-University Weimar and received his Diploma in 2003. In the same year he completed the master class of Arno Fischer at Ostkreuzschule in Berlin, Germany. In 2002, he got a one-year internship at Magnum Photos New York City office.

He has photographed nationwide and internationally, shooting for corporate clients. Alexander Burzik lives and works as a freelance lifestyle and portrait photographer in Weimar and creates stock photography from all around the world.

Holi

Holi (Sanskrit: होली Holī) is a Hindu spring festival that is celebrated across the Indian subcontinent and by the greater South Asian diaspora across the world. Aside from being the festival of colors, Holi is a time to celebrate unbridled joy, love, and the triumph of good over evil. Through visual art, this installation highlights some of the spirit and traditions associated with Holi such as throwing colored powdered and spraying colored water through pichkari at friends and family and poojas (religious ceremonies).  

This collection is the result of generous donations from the Athinoula A. Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging, the MGH Department of Dermatology, and the MGH Employee Resource Group Leaders Group.
